This is Where I Can Be Myself

My 21-year-old niece, Hannah, came to stay with my family and me on the weekend. She’s bright, fun, and a pleasure to be around. We watched movies, skated at the local park, went to the market, had great conversations, and enjoyed each other’s company.

One of the things I appreciate about Hannah’s visits is the feeling that I don’t have to put on any pretenses. When she’s around, I feel that I can be myself.

This weekend was no different. When Hannah arrived, the house was in disarray. I didn’t have elaborate meals planned. I displayed moments of parental frustration with my kids. I wore old track pants and barely combed my hair.

None of that bothered me (or her).

That’s because Hannah took it all in stride. She pitched in with the kids. She listened to me when I felt overwhelmed. She supported me. She didn’t judge.

By the end of the weekend, I found myself feeling happy, relaxed, accepted, and loved.

When it came time for Hannah to leave on Sunday evening, I was sad to see her go. Spending time with her reminded me that we all need wonderful women who support and accept us for who we really are.

I’m blessed to have many such women in my life. I hope you do too.
